Meet The Team: Luke Capablanca

Meet the Team: Spotlight on a Scorpio Seafarer

Second Officer Luke Capablanca was born to sail. Growing up in Cebu, a thriving port city in The Philippines that has been a trading hub for hundreds of years, he dreamed of crossing the oceans and visiting the world. He would watch vessels arriving and departing, envisaging their next embarkation, tracking their routes. What cultures could be explored, and how did these countries trade with his own? Global Economics, Politics, Trade, Logistics. Shipping seemed to be the common thread here, and the direct connection to an enticing future.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation, the next step in Luke’s journey commenced. In 2008, Luke became the Philippine Youth Ambassador for that year’s ASEAN Youth conference. This role encapsulated so many of the topics that were and continue to be of great importance to him, as the ASEAN Youth Organization program looks to empower young people to positively and sustainably develop their local communities.

In 2016, Luke became a 2nd Officer and in 2019, he joined the Scorpio family. Since his arrival, he has held a variety of positions, both formal and volunteer-based, which highlight Luke’s natural ability to foster enthusiastic and positive environments with his colleagues. These include upskilling officers on vessels in the safe and effective operation of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) system, to reviewing Passage Plans, to being an Ambassador of the Mental Health and Wellbeing program.

Recently, Luke joined the LPG expansion of Scorpio under the management of OPTRA. In addition to his daily navigational duties, he is involved in helping to bring the Priestly tanker up to Scorpio’s standards by guiding the new crew on the Safety Management System, the policies and processes, and software programs that are used.

His favorite aspect of the job? its dynamic nature. Every day brings new opportunities, and every challenge helps him to grow. With every contract, he meets new people, and gets to travel to new locations. His passion for exploring the world, with all its different cultures and people with unique customs is being fulfilled. For Scorpio, Luke is a truly appreciated colleague who helps us deliver energy around the world, in an increasingly sustainable manner.
