Scorpio is Founding Member of IMEF
Scorpio Group is proud to be a founding member of the new Maritime Environmental Footprint (IMEF) Initiative, launched by the International Marine Purchasing Association (IMPA), as part of the IMPA SAVE movement. The IMEF Initiative focuses on accurately calculating Scope 3 emissions, which include all indirect emissions that occur in a company’s value chain. With guidance from experts at Reflow Maritime, a new method has been developed to help companies report the carbon footprint of their maritime equipment and components more precisely.
Ship owners and managers are required to report the carbon footprint of every product they purchase, known as the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). IMPA SAVE aims to reduce environmental impacts across supply chains by aligning reporting practices and creating a common baseline. These guidelines help suppliers understand and manage the carbon footprints of their products, particularly during the production phase, and apply to all products supplied to the maritime industry through IMPA members.
A Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) measures the total greenhouse gas emissions a product generates from raw material extraction to disposal. While initial calculations may use CO2e, the ReCiPe methodology is recommended for accurate impact evaluation.
Unanimous endorsement and Collaborative Development
Along with 12 other leading maritime companies, Scorpio Group unanimously endorsed participation in this initiative, allowing IMPA to jumpstart the new reporting baseline, and encourage other maritime companies to join in.
Mikael J. Karlsson, the Chair of IMPA SAVE, stated: “In its initial edition, the guideline adopts a basic format intentionally crafted to provide a starting point. As we advance, we will work towards a more comprehensive framework that aligns with global standards and regional initiatives.”
By setting a strong baseline for emission reporting, the IMEF Initiative will make it easier for the maritime industry to reduce greenhouse gases and promote sustainability.
