Mercy Ships Awards Scorpio the 2022 Tanker Owner of the Year

The Cargo Day Gala celebrates the shipping community's fundraising for the charity.

Scorpio is proud to have been honored with the Tanker Owner Trophy Award at the Mercy Ships Cargo Day Gala in Geneva this past November. The annual Cargo Day ceremony not only awards the companies who pledged the most support, but also raises more money through a live charity auction of specially donated items and signed sports memorabilia. Accepting the award was our Commercial Director, Lars Dencker Nielsen (above right), who also happened to be the winning bidder for the MV Global Mercy Ship model.

The shipping and cargo industry has been an immense support for Mercy Ships, not only offering donations, but also for pledging cargoes, and sharing their address commissions. Founded by the late Tim Webb (pictured above left) 7 years ago, Cargo Day has since raised over $9 Million towards helping save people’s lives. The 2023 Cargo Day Gala Auction, with special participation from Senegalese footballer, Sadio Mané, raised an additional $272,000. Scorpio placed the winning bid for the Mercy Ship model (pictured to the right), which will make its home in the Monaco head office.  It is a privilege to support the Mercy Ships journey, and we praise the selfless work of Tim Webb, the founder of the charity.

Meet Malang

A mercy Ships patient is given life-changing surgery to correct his legs.

Every day, thanks to donations, Doctors aboard Mercy Ships perform what many consider miracles. Just one example is Malang, who was only 2 years old when his legs started to bow. His father, Sadio, didn’t know his son’s condition would continue to worsen. But as it became clear that it was a serious condition, Sadio began making the rounds to numerous doctors. No one understood what the problem was but it was clear he needed surgery. Sadio began working extra jobs to save money but there was no way he could afford to fix his son’s condition. He was heartbroken when he saw Malang couldn’t run with his friends and cried when he was left behind. In January of this year, Sadio brought Malang to the Global Mercy ship where they performed the necessary surgery free of cost. Malang and his father stayed through rehabilitation and can now walk easily without crutches.
